In the wake of the Larry Nassar trial and convictions, there are a lot of people wondering “Why was this not stopped from the beginning?”. That is a valid question that has a complicated answer. Children are impressionable and easily manipulated and more than that-trusting. What Larry Nassar did was abuse their innocence, naivety, and their desire to be Olympic champions someday. Nassar’s reputation as a world renowned sports physician succeeds all the abuse because adults, not children, respected him. Their pleas for help were dismissed as nothing more than made up fantasies. So these people who were protecting Nassar’s reputation were also protecting their own and the University of Michigan. As infuriating as this is, we see it time and time again with big organizations, but what about parents?...read more...
This is not only about abuse, rape or molestation, this about a man who made sure he was the best at what he did so that he could build an infallible reputation. Who would question that? This would be his shield against any and all accusations. Larry Nassar was so skilled at making people believe that he operated with the utmost professionalism that he was able to abuse these girls with their parents steps away. Because of the technique being used Nassar was able to convince school officials and parents that the examinations he was giving the girls were normal and not crossing the line. This suppressed their trauma even more when the girls tried to articulate what was happening. Quiet humiliation and silencing forced the girls to keep it locked up inside never to speak of it again, until January 2018. Those scared and traumatized little girls grew up. They are no longer scared and traumatized but ready to fight no matter if people believed them or not. Not only were they believed but the agonizing wait for closure was finally granted to them in the form of basically a life sentence for Larry Nassar. They finally found someone who REALLY listened. Not only did Judge Aquilina listen but she believed, which is what they wanted all along.
Men in positions of authority, elitism and professional privilege are believed to do no evil. It is common for people to think that a man who is well to do, respected and highly educated would never harm a child, or a woman and if he’s accused it’s because there must be a payoff involved. This toxic cultural paradigm must shift. Entitlement is no excuse for abuse, rape and exploitation. Young survivors of sex trafficking face the same stigmas but more often then not the men who bought them go free while they are left with a criminal record and no hope for a future. The real answer to all of this? Listen to the children.
